What I do.

I love art in all forms and am always eager to create, to organise, and to make art happen.  I compose, I curate, I perform, I produce art events, I create visual art, instruments and installations, I organise concerts, I research and present at conferences, and finally I teach and create workshops for any audience.

 How I do it.

I am not attached to a single means of working.  I come to a project or idea and decide what means best transmits the idea.

My recent interests centre around turning movement into sound to create works that explore out interaction with sound, as well as technology.

I use repurposed technology such as the Xbox Kinect, Gametrak Controller or webcams.

Or I create my own devices with Arduino.

I program with Java, Javascript, C++, Glsl, Processing, Max/MSP.

I score for instruments with traditional, graphic or text instruction.

I use Ableton, Adobe Audition or Logic Pro in the studio.

Biography

Richard McReynolds is a Belfast-born composer and multimedia artist living in Cardiff. His current interest is how technology can blur artistic mediums. Recent projects include: visualising sound, generating still images from sonic input, creating electronic instruments to track physical movement and designing light-tracking installations. His performances engage on a visual and sonic level.  His installation works invite the audience to play with sound, movement and digital control in active and embodied ways.

He co-founded newCELF; an interdisciplinary arts company that commission and showcase new artworks alongside contemporary classics. In 2020, Funded by the Arts Council of Wales, they commissioned 6 artists and created an online platform to present work. They have since included an additional 60 artists from around the world. In 2019 they organised a 9-day tour of Wales after receiving over 150 new submissions in an international call for works.

He performs regularly as a musician and performance artist.  He is currently a member of The Hooting Cow Collective, Lightning in a Bottle, The South Wales improvisers and is a resident artist at SHIFT Cardiff.
